This giant island in the State of Pará covers about 40,000 square meters, spans 12 municipalities, and is an eccentric destination in the north of the country. Located on the Amazon River or the sea, the local beaches attract visitors from afar in search of warm waters.
The highlighted beaches are Praia do Pinheiro (in the municipality of Salvaterra), one of the most beautiful, Praia do Pesqueiro (in Soure), with the best infrastructure, and Praia Grande de Salvaterra, which becomes the main meeting point on the island during the dry season. Located
next to Praia de Água Boa (the aptly named Good Water beach), there is a stream (a watercourse in the rainforest) of the same name, where you can take a refreshing bath and eat freshly grilled fish right after it’s caught!
The Pantanal area of the island can be accessed through farms that welcome tourists for their adventures. During the rainy season, the enormous lakes form an ecological sanctuary where birds, butterflies, aquatic plants, fish, alligators, sloths, and buffalo live. The buffalo are the symbols of the island. Raised to roam freely, they are part of the
landscape of the vast plains and small urban centers, serving as taxis, police mounts, or cart pullers. Of course, Marajó’s cuisine is heavily influenced by this livestock: milk, butter, and meat are local delights for everyone to enjoy.
The Cradle of Marajoara civilization (Cradle of Marajoara civilization) (an ancient people who lived on Marajó Island), the island’s millenary handicrafts enchant everyone with their beautiful jars, vases, and urns. It is no wonder that
Marajoara ceramics are known worldwide. But this is not the only cultural manifestation of Marajó. Carimbó, lundu, and siriá, dances with African, indigenous, and Lusitanian roots, enliven the local festivals.
There is also an itinerary for the more adventurous. Marajó offers jungle hikes, horseback riding on the farms, cycling on the
beaches, and surfing on the pororoca, a wave phenomenon caused by the meeting of the river with the sea.
The island of Marajó is a destination that manages to combine rivers and sea, beaches, mangroves, adventure, and relaxation all in one place, with an exotic flavor, driven by a lush culture.
