Located in the building of the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios de São Paulo, the Pinacoteca was inaugurated in 1905 and is the oldest art museum in the city of São Paulo. Its art collection has approximately 1900 artistic, bibliographic, and archival items.
The Pinacoteca displays works such as ‘São Paulo’ by Tarsila do Amaral and ‘Mestizo’ by Candido Portinari. In recent years, the museum has hosted important exhibitions, such as that of Ron Mueck, seen by 402 thousand people.
Designated as a historical heritage site, the Parque da Luz and the museum’s garden house about 50 sculptures by contemporary artists, such as Victor Brecheret, Lasar Segall, and Amílcar de Castro.
In 2004, the museum gained another building, which was renovated and renamed Estação Pinacoteca. The Estação Pinacoteca houses the Memorial da Resistência de São Paulo, the Documentation Center, the Walter Wey Library, the Nemirovsky Collection, an important collection of modern art in Brazil, and the Guita and José Mindlin Illustration Cabinet.
