Lençóis Maranhenses & Grand Canyon: Distinct Yet Equally Spectacular

Brazilian photographer Meireles Junior recently launched in New York his latest book: “Supernatural: Impressions on the Lençóis Maranhenses and the Grand Canyon.”

The book explores the charms and mysteries of these two geographically different natural paradises, so unique for their grandeur and stunning beauty.

The idea of producing the book comparing the two places came after a tourist trip the photographer, who is also from the State of Maranhão, made to the Grand Canyon about 3 years ago. “When I arrived, I felt the same energy that I feel in the Lençóis Maranhenses. Something else touched me. Then I thought: why not bring together in the same publication two inhospitable places, immensely beautiful and full of stories to tell?” says Meireles.

The project resulted not only in a book of images but also in a 20-minute documentary that reveals the making of the project. Thus, the book comes with a DVD.

The Author

Meireles Junior began his career as a photographer in 1995, when he was still a final-year Design student at the Federal University of Maranhão. Over the years since then, he has developed a truly refined technique, as well as won awards, recognition from expert critics, and, above all, the respect of the general public.

The artist has published five books: Lume (2001), Discovering the Lençóis Maranhenses (2003), Between Heaven and Earth – Maranhão Image Legacy (2008), 400 Light Years (2012), Over São Luís (2014), and Supernatural: Impressions about the Lençóis Maranhenses and the Grand Canyon (2016).

The publication is bilingual (Portuguese/English). To purchase it, visit the photographer’s website www.meirelesjunior.com or send an email to kakapc2@gmail.com.
