New Laws Grant Rights to Brazilian Women

President Temer signed laws benefiting Brazilian women. The first sanctioned project enrolls Zuleika Angel Jones, known as Zuzu Angel, one of the most important and innovative Brazilian designers, in the Book of Heroes and Heroines of the Homeland. The second amends the Penal Code to prohibit the use of handcuffs on pregnant women during childbirth and the postpartum period. The third establishes August as National Breastfeeding Month. The fourth amends the Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA) to ensure breastfeeding mothers the right to support and guidance regarding breastfeeding. The last creates the National Week for Combating Violence Against Women, to be celebrated in November. For President Temer, the sanctioned projects benefit women and reaffirm their role in the country’s development. “Women are agents of change in the country. They are also the driving force behind significant legislative acts over time,” he said.
