Hot Air Balloon Rides in Brazilian Landscapes

Hot air balloon rides reveal the charms and secrets found in the beautiful Brazilian landscapes. The itineraries appeal to everyone from couples to groups of friends looking to experience a unique moment.

Aboard the balloon, tourists can feel the sensation of flying as if they are floating at 500 meters above sea level. As the balloon advances towards the clouds, the cityscape begins to take shape in miniature.

About 90% of the flight structures are located in the state of São Paulo. In this region, the rides are more regularly maintained in Sorocaba, Piracicaba, São Pedro, and Boituva.

“Flying over the city of São Pedro is an incredible experience. The view from above is impressive, with the mountains and various waterfalls. Not to mention the city’s infrastructure, which is also attractive, with several hotels and inns,” says the South American altitude record holder and hot air balloon instructor from AirBrasil, Feodor Nenov, who has 27 years of experience.

For the more adventurous, there are also options in Chapada dos Veadeiros, Goiás, Rio de Janeiro, and the Northern region of the country.

The flight preparation begins early. If the weather conditions are favorable, “the balloon starts being prepared at 6:10 AM, and takeoff happens half an hour later,” says instructor Feodor, emphasizing that the balloons can accommodate 16 passengers per flight.

The pilot begins the procedures by removing the balloon stored in a plastic bag inside a trailer. Then, he connects the cables to the balloon’s burner and fills the compartment with cold air.

Passengers are also invited to closely observe the entire balloon assembly process, as well as listen attentively to the basic safety rules. “The day before the flight, we also call each one and inform them if the wind conditions are ideal for takeoff,” says Feodor Nenov.

During the balloon trip, it is not possible to chart a precise route. This is because the wind determines the flight and takeoff conditions. “We always depend on the wind direction; we generally fly with winds at 15 km/h. Therefore, we have a support team on the ground, I provide a briefing with my expectations regarding the flight path and confirm the information after takeoff. With radio communication, I maintain contact at all times,” reports Feodor Nenov.

Each season of the year has a determining characteristic; sometimes the vegetation is more yellowed, and sometimes the air temperature is higher. “Generally, January is the most difficult month to fly, as the weather is very rainy,” he adds.

In general, the sightseeing balloons accommodate up to 16 passengers per flight. Children from 6 years old are welcome to enjoy the adventure. “The recommendation is to always wear comfortable clothing. In addition to a cap and sunscreen, passengers can bring a camera to capture the flight,” lists the instructor.

The flight lasts for one hour, plus the two hours that include the preparation and dismantling of the balloon. There is no maximum altitude limit that the equipment can reach. “We generally fly up to 500 meters in altitude. Part of the time is used to fly over the treetops, skim over rivers and lakes, as well as enjoy the panoramic view of the region,” says Feodor Nenov.

If the landing occurs in a different location from the takeoff, a van is called to pick up the participants. “We also celebrate the flight with a traditional toast of champagne, breakfast, and we leave the space open for participants to share their impressions during the flight,” reports the instructor.

The practice of ballooning in Brazil is regulated and supervised by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). To operate this type of activity (conducting tourist panoramic flights), the pilot must be registered in the air taxi category and have their equipment certified. When choosing a hot air balloon ride, instructor Feodor Nenov advises interested parties to check the pilot’s experience and the company’s time in the market. “It is essential that the instructor conveys safety to the passengers on board,” he states.
