Book: Mystery in Chalk Hill – The Brasilians

Book: Mystery in Chalk Hill

Many times it is good for us to start reading a book without expecting anything from it, and that is exactly how I began Mystery in Chalk Hill by Susanne Goga, a release from Editora Jangada. Considering that I love stories set in other times, especially when it comes to the Victorian era, Susanne Goga surprised me a lot. The author takes us to uncover a mystery that is carefully distributed across its 424 pages, without leaving us bored for a single moment.

Susanne, in addition to immersing us in this beautiful mystery, also presents us with some references throughout the narrative, where we can find a certain detective who was not yet famous but was already beginning to excite English readers, and also a certain classic horror author involving a certain creature, however already deceased and famous at the time when the entire plot takes place. Susanne masterfully separates the narratives between the main characters, where each has their personal problems to solve. The main focus, without a doubt, is the perspective of Charlotte Pauly, which is shared with the theater critic, literary critic, and journalist, Tom Ashdown, who also has his own demons haunting him. The chemistry between the two characters is very good, and when they come together to discover what is really happening in Chalk Hill, they demonstrate a very believable and enjoyable complicity to see in such a well-written story. I can’t say that Mystery in Chalk Hill is a novelty in terms of plot, but I can say with complete certainty that it is a very well-written, well-paced story that captivates you from the first lines to the last paragraph written by the author. It is very cool how the author makes us like all the characters throughout the story. Even those who deserve disdain end up finding their place in our hearts as readers. I think this kind of feat is one of the most difficult things to achieve when writing a book, but Susanne Goga succeeded.

Mystery in Chalk Hill is a book for those who enjoy well-told stories, set in the past, with very captivating, well-built characters that are practically impossible to put down before the end.
