Visual Pollution – The Brasilians

Visual pollution is a type of modern pollution found in large urban centers, as it designates the excess of information contained in signs, poles, billboards, banners, posters, taxis, cars, and other advertising vehicles, as well as urban degradation resulting from graffiti, excessive electrical wires, and accumulation of waste.

This exacerbated visual communication in large cities, characteristic of mass culture that encourages consumption, has spiraled out of control in recent decades, leading to an identity disfigurement of the place (original architecture, cultural heritage, etc.), promoted by the excess of information as well as the disharmony of space, which causes a huge visual discomfort for humans, affecting their quality of life.

In this sense, one only needs to think of a metropolis full of advertisements and graffiti, where the average citizen goes from being an active being with freedom of expression to a crushed and alienated spectator by brands and consumption.

Finally, visual pollution goes against the aesthetic harmony of the urban environment, being a highly discussed topic today, after all, we all want a beautiful and clean city, pleasant places to live, and environments that promote the well-being of the population.

Many companies, aiming to generate profit, believe in the role of advertising their product, and due to the lack of laws prioritizing the quality of life of humans in large cities, this visual pollution has increased considerably, which, along with light pollution (excess artificial light) and noise pollution (excess noise), can generate many health problems in the population, especially mental health issues, a fact that has been alerted by psychologists.
In addition to being generated by companies, citizens themselves can contribute to the increase of visual pollution by degrading the environment (deterioration of heritage, graffiti, etc.) and green areas, which are replaced by some type of visual pollution.

Despite health problems such as stress, psychological disorders, and visual fatigue, there are also sanitary issues (caused by the excess of garbage and waste), and an increase in traffic accidents, as this excess of information and signage can distract drivers. Consequently, urban mobility problems arise, since pedestrian movement can be affected by the excess of signs, poles, billboards, among others.

In addition to encouraging public policies that prioritize the reduction of the numerous types of pollution in cities promoting the quality of life of citizens, the awareness of advertising companies and the citizens themselves is essential to promote the improvement of the quality of life of the urban population.
