The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) has officially converted four private properties into Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPNs). The date was chosen to coincide with National RPPN Day. It was also confirmed that 65 vehicles will be delivered to ICMBio’s conservation units.
The areas that were officially designated are Contendas II, located in Ituberá (BA); Sítio Lagoa, which is in the municipality of Guaramiranga (CE); Cachoeira do Andorinhão, Cambuí (MG); and Reserva Volta Velha – Pe. Piet Van Der Art, located in Itapoá (SC).
Created by the initiative of private owners, RPPNs have as their main characteristic the conservation of biological diversity. Furthermore, the owner does not lose ownership of the area, and private initiatives can participate in the national effort to conserve nature, creating new job and income opportunities in the region.
