Ian Fleming – The Brasilians

Ian Fleming was an English writer and journalist. He created the character James Bond, who became famous worldwide as the ‘Agent 007.’ He was an officer in the United Kingdom’s Naval Intelligence.

Sir Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in London on May 28, 1908. He came from the English aristocracy. He was the son of Major Valentine Fleming, who died in World War I. He attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He began his career during World War II when he worked as a correspondent for the Times newspaper. He transmitted information at the Reuters News Agency in Berlin and Russia.

Ian Fleming gained experience in espionage activities in Russia and later joined the British Naval Intelligence Service, where he was a commander. His work environment inspired him to create the character James Bond, a secret agent who lived dangerous adventures.

The name James Bond was inspired by the book ‘Birds of the West Indies,’ written by an ornithologist. Ian Fleming wrote a total of twelve novels and two collections of short stories, all during World War II. The first book featuring James Bond was ‘Casino Royale,’ inspired by his unsuccessful experiences in gambling, published in 1953. Another important book written by Fleming was ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,’ a children’s book that was adapted into a film in 1968.

Ian Fleming died of a heart attack in 1964 at the age of 56, not reaching to see one of the most successful films in the James Bond series: ‘007 Against Goldfinger.’
