The biggest Brazilian party outside of Brazil, and the most anticipated of the year, is coming. BR Day NY is set for September 2, the day before Labor Day in the United States, starting at 11 AM on 6th Avenue. As has been the case for over three decades, the celebration will be marked by lots of Brazilian music, typical food from the country, and, best of all, the contagious joy of the Brazilian people.
For the 34th edition of the event, the organizers have planned a party with diverse attractions to satisfy a multicultural audience, including the thousands of Brazilians coming from various parts of the USA.
Bringing Brazilian pop rock, the renowned band Paralamas do Sucesso will take the stage at BR Day NY for the first time. They promise to recall their greatest hits and excite many, especially fans of 80s music.
As usual, sertanejo music will be present on 6th Avenue. This year, the duo Matheus & Kauan will warm the hearts of lovers. The young brothers have several hits recorded and already have a history of sold-out shows across Brazil.
And to completely drive crazy those who can’t stay still, the biggest producer and DJ in Brazil, Dennis DJ, will bring his famous dance party to the largest Brazilian festival in the USA. The “Baile do Dennis” will get the crowd moving with the best of funk and special guests Tony Garrido and MC Koringa.
To complete the star lineup, BR Day NY will also feature a rising star of Brazilian music, the winner of The Voice Kids Brazil, Eduarda Brasil, and hosting the party will be presenter Ana Furtado.
BR Day NY 2018 takes place on September 2 starting at 11 AM. The shows begin at 1 PM and end around 6 PM. The stage is set up on 6th Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets, but the party extends along 6th Avenue up to Central Park.
History
BR Day NY was created in 1984 by businessman João de Matos as a way to celebrate Brazil’s Independence. Initially, the party was limited to 46th Street, known as Little Brazil; but over the years it grew so much that it had to be moved to 6th Avenue. Today, BR Day NY attracts an audience of over 1 million people who spread annually across various blocks of 6th Avenue to see and hear great hits of Brazilian music, satisfy their longing for home with Brazilian cuisine and typical products, and socialize with fellow countrymen living in various parts of the USA.
Organization
BR Day NY is co-produced by businessman João de Matos, the newspaper The Brasilians, and TV Globo Internacional. As soon as one edition ends, the team starts thinking about the next one, especially regarding the musical attractions
to come. The biggest challenge is always finding artists who satisfy the community with availability on the day of BR Day NY, which has a flexible date. But the party is only truly set up on the day itself. At midnight on Sunday, the NYC police close 6th Avenue, and that’s when the stage setup begins. A huge structure is erected in just a few hours, as the green-yellow crowd starts arriving in the morning.
Caravans
The audience at BR Day NY is quite diverse and, although it is mostly composed of Brazilians, there are people of all nationalities. Hispanics and Americans love the “Day of Brazil” and enjoy the party just as much as the Brazilians do. They come from all over the USA, many in organized caravans months before the event. In fact, the organizers recommend that Brazilians from other states come in caravans, as besides being able to relax during the journey, caravan members have reserved spots closer to the stage. If you are interested in organizing a caravan to go to BR Day NY, call (212) 398-6464 and speak with Marilene de Carolis, or if you want to know where the nearest caravan is, visit the website www.brazilianday.com.
Be VIP
BR Day NY is great from anywhere on 6th Avenue, which has screens and sound spread across various points. However, the closer you are to the stage, the greater the excitement. If you are not coming in a caravan, to get up front you need to arrive early, sometimes very early. Some people are already there before
7 AM. But there is also another way to be right next to the stage. The event organization offers VIP t-shirts that can be purchased in advance, guaranteeing not only a privileged spot to watch the shows but also access to the backstage, where snacks and drinks will be available. The number of t-shirts is limited, so if you are interested in enjoying the party as a VIP, visit the website www.brazilianday.com to get yours.
Fair
It’s not just the music that enchants attendees at BR Day NY; Brazilian cuisine and crafts are also always well represented at the festival. Along 6th Avenue and especially on 46th Street, the public finds stalls with food, sweets, crafts, and other Brazilian products. The variety is so great that one might think they have been transported to Brazil. There are sugarcane juice with pastel, acarajé, green corn cake, barbecue skewers, guaraná, bikinis, team jerseys, and much more. If you are interested in exhibiting or selling your product at BR Day NY, you should reserve your space
with Mardi Gras Festival Productions by calling (212) 809-4900.
