Cofibam Brings Power to the Antarctic Station – The Brasilians

Cofibam Brings Power to the Antarctic Station

The brand Cofibam, a leader in the manufacture of special cables, has long been synonymous with leadership since it was commissioned to develop a pioneering project that would go down in history as one of the most complex and challenging tasks undertaken by the company’s Engineering team.

In partnership with the Brazilian Navy, Cofibam developed power cables responsible for the energy generated at the Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz (EACF), inaugurated in the early 1980s. The significant challenges faced in developing this project were the barriers imposed by the natural characteristics of Antarctica, as the cable would be transported by the Oceanographic Ship Barão de Teffé and might not withstand the climatic and transport demands on the long journey to the frozen continent. The challenge for Cofibam’s Engineering team was to create a special insulator that would allow the cable to endure all stages of the journey, which would begin on the Oceanographic Ship and then be launched by a helicopter to a location with many rocks. With all obstacles overcome, the Cofibam Cable continued its journey across the seas and is still responsible for keeping the Brazilian Scientific Station active, which is one of the few allowed to explore the wonders and mysteries of the Antarctic Continent.

Due to the intense cold and violent winds, Antarctica is permanently covered in ice and has unfavorable conditions for almost all forms of life, except for some animals like seals, penguins, and whales. In addition to Brazil, which joined the Antarctic Treaty in 1975 and with the Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz, other countries have scientific bases on the continent: Argentina, Australia, Chile, China, the United States, France, Italy, Norway, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, among others.

Founded in Brazil in 1973 with the purpose of being an electric conductor industry and operating in a little-explored market, it now holds the national leadership in the manufacture of special cables. Learn more at: www.cofibam.com.br
