Do you know Acre? – The Brasilians

Do you know Acre?

Acre is the union of tradition and modernity in building human development and is considered a unique society preserving the values and customs of “Florestania,” which are the principles of respect for the environment and sociocultural multiplicity. With the largest biodiversity on Earth, its 16 million hectares of tropical forest are home to half of its inhabitants. Among them are indigenous people and owners of reserves from various ethnicities.

It is not only biodiversity that stands out in the state, but also its strong and unique history. Acre went through many struggles for its land, which was taken by colonizers during the time rubber was discovered in the region. However, its inhabitants and the rubber tappers (those who extract latex from rubber trees for rubber production) clashed with the colonizers to occupy the region. Even though the golden age of rubber and the times of struggle have passed, history is still present in the landscapes of Acre, such as in Xapuri,

the historic city considered the Cradle of the Acre Revolution and a symbol of the Global Environmental Movement, which also hosted important events related to the struggle of Chico Mendes, a rubber tapper and union leader.
Xapuri
The “Little Princess of Acre,” Xapuri is a historic city, the birthplace of the Acre Revolution and a symbol of the Global Environmental Movement. The city is also known for its illustrious resident, the rubber tapper and union leader Chico Mendes. Xapuri was the site of important events related to Chico Mendes’ struggle and has as one of its attractions the house where the rubber leader was killed in 1988.
In the Reserve, also called the Chico Mendes Agroextractivist Settlement Project, lies the Seringal Cachoeira, where family members of the environmentalist still live today. At the site, it is possible to experience the daily life of the wise rubber tappers and learn about the stories and legends of the forest and its peoples.
