Campos do Jordão – The Brasilians

Campos do Jordão

Known as the “Brazilian Switzerland,” Campos do Jordão, located in the State of São Paulo, lives up to its glamorous title when winter arrives in the Southern Hemisphere. At 1,628 meters above sea level (it is the highest urban center in the country), framed by the mountains of the Serra da Mantiqueira and the colorful woods with the yellow of the plane trees, the city excels in typical European architecture, gastronomy that combines flavors and recipes from the Old World, and the cultured programming of the Winter Festival, one of the most prestigious in the country when it comes to classical music. In July, all the virtues of Campos do Jordão receive generous doses of sophistication. Along with them come novelties and surprises that can be translated into a ski resort with artificial snow, gigantic shopping centers, and nightclubs that are only open for a month. There’s also the Winter Festival, featuring concerts in squares and churches. The Brazilian “Alps,” however, also present rustic facets. To explore them, take part in tours that evoke the bucolic charm of the mountains covered with araucarias. By cable car, you can reach Morro do Elefante, which offers a panoramic view of the city.An English-style train takes you to the small town of Santo Antônio do Pinhal, passing through the highest stretch of railway in the country. Steep trails and a staircase of hooks lead to the top of Pedra do Baú, the official lookout point of the region, also accessible by horseback riding.

Despite its reputation as a sophisticated destination, Campos do Jordão offers many attractions typical of small towns, such as tram and cable car rides, as well as horseback riding and visits to gardens. But there are also adrenaline-filled tours, like jeep trips to Pedra do Baú or quad biking on dirt roads leading to waterfalls. The natural beauty of the Alto da Boa Vista neighborhood frames the main cultural centers of Campos do Jordão. It invites visitors to explore places like the Palácio Boa Vista, the winter residence of the governor, and the Felícia Leiner Museum, located in the gardens of the Cláudio Santoro Auditorium.

Campos do Jordão gains an extra dose of glamour in July, when the Winter Festival takes place. The classical music event, which began in 1969, continues to grow, attracting renowned musicians from Brazil and abroad. The extensive program also includes workshops for young musicians.

The night in Campos do Jordão begins and ends in Vila Capivari.

It’s best to walk around. An alternative is to use the urban gondola, which traverses the entire city.

In Campos do Jordão, there are no traffic lights – be attentive to pedestrian movement on the crosswalk.
