The Brazilian Endowment for the Arts, whose most recognized face is the Brazilian Library of New York, celebrated its 20th anniversary on December 20th at the institution’s headquarters.
Founded by Domício Coutinho and his family, the BEA is a cultural center located in the heart of Manhattan, aimed at promoting and cultivating the use of the language, literature, and culture of the U.S.A.
The institution is a non-profit organization that fulfills its mission through the promotion of conferences, lectures, congresses, art exhibitions, Portuguese classes, film screenings, book launches, and literary events.
During the event, which featured a notable guest list, new projects and updates from the institution were announced – which promises to move to a new home in 2020, along with the delivery
of the Machado de Assis Medal of Honor, the formal recognition given to those who have excelled in promoting Brazilian culture.
This year’s honorees were Minister Lúcia Maria Maierá and Professor Kenneth David Jackson, who were present at the occasion. The event also featured a memorable harmonica performance by the brilliant Gary Cobin (who, moreover, speaks Portuguese like one of us), followed by a cocktail reception for the distinguished guests of the evening.
The ceremony was conducted and organized by Gerusa Maso from EPL MKT Consulting and received voluntary donations from Krika Events Decor, Maria de Oliveira, Sabor Bahia, and Grupo Mulheres de Nova York, which further enhanced this very special date.
