Ney Matogrosso at Central Park, NYC – The Brasilians

In association with the Arte Institute, Summerstage, Rumsey Playfield, this year presents Ney Matogrosso, Francisco El Hombre, Fado Bicha, and DJ Set by Surma on July 17th, Sunday starting at 5 PM.

Classified by Rolling Stone as the third greatest Brazilian singer of all time, Ney Matogrosso emerged in the 70s with Secos e Molhados, but his extravagant stage theatrics, loud costumes, and unique high countertenor voice made him one of those distinctly unique artists that emerged from Latin America in the 20th century. A winner of a Grammy Latino Lifetime Achievement Award, Matogrosso will perform at Central Park in a rare visit to the USA. The self-proclaimed “pachanga folk” band Francisco El Hombre created their latest album Casa Francisco in isolation under the watchful eyes of video cameras, live-streaming their production like a pseudo-reality show. Their 2017 song “Triste, Louca ou Má” (Sad, Crazy or Bad) was nominated for a Latin Grammy. The show also features two homegrown artists: Lisbon’s Fado Bicha, a queer, anti-racist, and feminist duo that pushes the boundaries of traditional fado and challenges the political status quo in Portugal, and Surma’s DJ set, a one-woman band that uses a dozen instruments to accompany an ethereal voice.

Show sponsored by the Consulate General of Brazil in New York and the Gar-cia Family Foundation.
