Rio de Janeiro has been chosen for the second consecutive time as the top destination in South America for sports tourism. The announcement was made on Wednesday (10/20) in London by the World Travel Awards, a global initiative that recognizes excellence in travel and tourism. The title came after a survey conducted by the organization among major travel, tourism, and hospitality brands. All votes were cast by industry professionals and the public, with the nominee receiving the highest number of votes in each category.
According to the Minister of Tourism, Gilson Machado Neto, the recognition of Rio de Janeiro is well-deserved, as the destination is rich in sports tourism activities. “The capital has already hosted two major global sporting events, such as the Olympics and two World Cups, and it did so very well. It is only fair to receive this title, as in addition to natural and cultural beauties, Rio de Janeiro also offers numerous options for those traveling in search of sports,” he said.
In addition to international sporting events, the capital of Rio de Janeiro is home to the only Olympic golf course in the world and the only one in Latin America at an international level. The city also has countless options for tourists looking for destinations to practice various sports. Paragliding at Pedra Bonita, surfing, windsurfing, and yachting in Guanabara Bay, kitesurfing in Barra da Tijuca, are just a few options. Travelers can also hike on Morro Dois Irmãos and the Transcarioca (the largest urban trail in the country, approximately 180km), marathons, beach volleyball, and footvolley.
We cannot forget to mention the world-famous Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The stadium has hosted two World Cup finals as well as the Pan American and Olympic Games. Recently, the venue resumed its tour, which includes a visit to one of the stadium’s locker rooms, decorated with jerseys from clubs competing in the first division of the Brazilian Championship. Additionally, visitors can check out the pitch, sit on one of the reserve benches, and learn more about the great players who made history, such as Pelé, Zico, and Mané Garrincha.
