Starting this week, Brazilians need a visa to Mexico

The Government of Mexico has determined that all Brazilians intending to travel to Mexico for tourism or business must obtain a physical visa printed in their passport before boarding to the country. This measure comes into effect on August 18, 2022.

Until then, Brazilians only needed an electronic authorization that could be obtained for free on the website of the National Institute of Migration of Mexico.

However, aiming to curb illegal immigration to the United States, the new rules were announced by the Secretariat of Foreign Relations (SRE).

“These actions seek to strengthen safe, orderly, and regular migration and eradicate misinformation campaigns that profit from migrants,” stated the Mexican government.

To apply for the visa, which will be valid for 180 days, Brazilians must schedule an appointment on the SRE website, upon payment of a fee of $48. With the appointment number, it will be necessary to go to the selected Mexican consulate at the time of scheduling (in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, or Brasília) and present the required documentation.

Exceptions

Citizens who hold a valid physical visa or documents proving permanent residence in Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the European Union, and member countries of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Peru) are exempt from the physical visa requirement.
