Unilever has initiated the recall of certain aerosol dry shampoos from the brands Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI, and TRESemmé due to the potential presence of benzene, a chemical that can cause cancer.
The affected products were produced before October 2021 and were distributed to retailers nationwide, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported.
Benzene is a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur through inhalation, orally, and through the skin, and can result in cancer, including leukemia and blood cancer, according to the FDA’s notice.
Consumers should immediately stop using the affected products and visit the website UnileverRecall.com for instructions on how to receive a refund for eligible products, the FDA stated.
Last year, Procter & Gamble (PG) recalled over 30 aerosol hair products, including many dry shampoos and conditioners, warning that the products could contain benzene. P&G also issued a similar recall notice for more than a dozen aerosol deodorants and sprays from the brands Old Spice and Secret, warning that those products could also contain benzene.
Pine-Sol from Clorox is also being recalled
About 37 million bottles of Pine-Sol products are to be recalled because they may contain a potentially harmful bacteria.
Clorox stated that some of the affected Pine-Sol products may contain a bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can be harmful especially to people with compromised immune systems or those with external medical devices because they pose a “risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment.”
Eight different versions of Pine-Sol have been pulled from the market, including scented multi-surface cleaning products Pine-Sol (lavender clean, sparkling, and fresh lemon scents), CloroxPro Pine-Sol multi-purpose cleaners (lavender clean, sparkling wave, fresh lemon, and energizing orange scents), and Clorox Professional Pine-Sol fresh lemon cleaner.
The affected Pine-Sol products were manufactured between January 2021 and September 2022. The described products were made at Clorox’s Forest Park facility in Georgia. They were sold on Amazon and at various national retailers such as Walmart, Target, Sam’s Club, Kroger, and Dollar Tree.
The recalled bottles have date codes starting with the prefix “A4” followed by a five-digit number less than 22249.
If anyone has a bottle of Pine-Sol that is subject to the recall, the agency advises to dispose of it and contact Pine-Sol for a refund. A special website has been created for refunds and more information: www.pinesolrecall.com
