The death toll in Turkey and Syria, which continues to be updated, exceeded 7,200 on the afternoon of this Tuesday (7) as a result of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck both countries on Monday (6). There are over 35,000 injured, filling hospitals in the affected cities and nearby regions.
Thousands of buildings have collapsed in both countries, and humanitarian agencies are particularly concerned about northwestern Syria, where more than 4 million people were already dependent on humanitarian assistance.
Weather conditions, including very cold temperatures and even snow in some areas, are putting survivors at risk and complicating rescue efforts. To make matters worse, over 100 aftershocks have hit the region.
Dozens of countries are already sending humanitarian aid to the area.
A newborn baby was rescued from the rubble in Syria
A newborn baby girl was rescued from the rubble of her home in northern Syria after the earthquake.
Her umbilical cord was still attached to her mother when she was found, a relative told Agence France-Presse. It is believed that her mother died after giving birth.
“We heard a voice while we were digging,” said cousin Khalil al-Suwadi to AFP. “We brushed off the dust and found the baby with the umbilical cord (intact), so we cut it, and my cousin took her to the hospital.”
The girl is now receiving treatment at a children’s hospital in the city of Afrin. Pediatrician Hani Maarouf told AFP that she is stable but arrived with bruises, lacerations, and hypothermia.
The baby is the only survivor of her immediate family, according to Suwadi. They lived in a five-story apartment building that was destroyed by the earthquake.
