If you followed the 95th Academy Awards ceremony, which took place on Sunday (12), you already know that “Everything Everywhere, All At Once” won the best picture statuette, along with six other awards in major categories. In other words, the film that tells the story of a Chinese-American family in the multiverse truly impressed the Academy.
Check out some highlights from the Ceremony and the list of winners in the main categories.
Michelle Yeoh becomes the first Asian woman to win the Best Actress award
In the 95 years of Oscar history, an Asian artist had never taken home the best actress statuette – until last Sunday, when Michelle Yeoh won the Oscar for her performance as a laundromat owner in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”.
The most emotional speech was from Ke Huy Quan
The most heartfelt words came from Ke Huy Quan, 51, who won the Oscar for best supporting actor.
After two childhood successes (in “Indiana Jones” and “The Goonies”), his career stagnated for two long decades until he landed the role of a supportive yet neglected husband in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the role that placed him among the award winners at the Dolby Theatre.
“My journey began on a boat,” he said. “I spent a year in a refugee camp. And somehow, I ended up here on the biggest stage in Hollywood. They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I can’t believe this is happening to me. This is the American dream.”
The Return of Brendan Fraser
90s star (“George of the Jungle,” “The Mummy,” etc.), Brendan Fraser took some time away from the spotlight, which he says was due to an allegation that he was sexually abused by a head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2003.
“I started in this business 30 years ago, and things haven’t been easy for me. But there was an ease that I didn’t appreciate at the time until it stopped… thank you for this recognition,” Fraser said in his emotional acceptance speech.
Lady Gaga always making headlines
During the awards ceremony on Sunday, Lady Gaga took the stage for a performance of one of the tracks from “Top Gun: Maverick,” which was nominated for Best Original Song. In contrast to the glamour of the ceremony, Gaga appeared on stage wearing a black t-shirt, ripped jeans, and sneakers. She was also completely makeup-free. But that wasn’t how she arrived at the awards. On the red carpet, the singer drew attention in a black Versace dress.
Where was Tom Cruise?
The man who saves the film industry couldn’t save the date. Tom Cruise did not confirm his attendance at the biggest night in cinema. Just hours before the broadcast, a representative for the actor told the press that his absence was due to obligations related to his upcoming film Mission: Impossible 8.
