More Companies Are Laying Off Workers. A Sign of Economic Cooling?

BuzzFeed, Lyft, Whole Foods, and Deloitte recently announced layoffs that affected thousands of American workers. They join a growing list of companies that are reducing their workforce this year amid concerns about the future of the economy, as well as the need to downsize after a wave of hiring during the pandemic.

After months of historic post-pandemic growth, the labor market is also beginning to slow down. U.S. employers created 236,000 jobs in March, below expectations.

The March total is a notable decrease from the 326,000 jobs created in February and the significant number of jobs created in January – 472,000.

In the past 12 months, the labor market has recorded a net gain of over 4.1 million jobs, with an average of 345,417 jobs generated per month, helping to reduce the unemployment rate to its lowest levels in decades.
