The Biden administration announced on Monday (8) that it will seek to require airlines to compensate passengers for extensive flight delays and cancellations.
The proposed rule will require airlines to provide cash payments, rather than just refunds, for significant travel disruptions that are under the airline’s control. Currently, no airline guarantees cash compensation for delays or cancellations in the United States, according to the Department of Transportation.
The airline industry is under intense scrutiny following a series of flight delays and cancellations, after a sudden surge in demand with the end of the coronavirus pandemic.
The proposed rule adds to the Department of Transportation’s efforts to pressure the airline industry to improve its policies regarding consumers. Last September, the Department launched an online dashboard that shows travelers what services they are entitled to if their flights are delayed or canceled (www.thebrasilians.com/quais-sao-seus-direitos-em-caso-de-cancelamento-ou-atraso-de-voos/?lang=pb)
