Former Vice President Mike Pence filed the paperwork declaring his presidential candidacy on Monday (5), embarking on a campaign against the former president he served, Donald J. Trump.
Pence has received single-digit results in all the polls conducted so far, far behind Trump, who remains the frontrunner in the polls for now.
The former vice president plans to launch his candidacy to the public at a rally on Wednesday in Des Moines and is planning an extensive campaign in Iowa, a place where his hardline conservative positions may attract evangelical voters.
A strong supporter and defender of Trump during the latter half of the 2016 presidential campaign, he was Trump’s most loyal advocate throughout their time in office together.
But the relationship between them began to sour when Trump pressured Pence to block the certification of Joseph Biden Jr.’s victory in the Electoral College after Trump lost the 2020 election. Pence refused to use his role overseeing the ceremonial certification of the election results at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, to further Trump’s aims.
On that day, a pro-Trump mob attacked the Capitol, with some of Trump’s supporters shouting, “Hang Mike Pence!” Since then, the rift between the two has become irrevocable.
The Republican primary is sure to be unmissable!
