Thanksgiving: Some Curiosities About the Most Celebrated Holiday in the USA – The Brasilians

The most celebrated holiday in the United States has arrived. And even if you weren’t born in this country, it’s impossible to let such a symbolic date go by unnoticed.

In a nutshell, Thanksgiving began as a celebration to give thanks for the harvest of that year. Over time, it became a day to express gratitude for all the blessings received and an opportunity to gather and socialize with family and friends.
Some curiosities about the date
Why is Thanksgiving celebrated every year on a Thursday?
More than 230 years ago, President George Washington designated November 26 as the national day of Thanksgiving in 1789.

In October 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed a proclamation designating the last Thursday in November as the day to observe Thanksgiving.

The decree remained in effect until 1939, when the last Thursday in November coincided with the last day of the month, drastically shortening the Christmas shopping season and potentially impacting the country’s economic recovery after the Great Depression.

Thus, in 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt signed a resolution declaring the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day, and the decree is still in effect today.
