Oscar 2024: Who Are the Nominees? – The Brasilians

Christopher Nolan’s biopic of the atomic bomb, “Oppenheimer,” has solidified itself as the powerhouse of the season with 13 nominations for the 96th Oscar.

The Academy announced the Oscar nominees on Tuesday (23), and “Oppenheimer” is competing for Best Picture and Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), and Supporting Actress (Emily Blunt). The dark comedy “Poor Things” received 11 nominations, while Martin Scorsese’s epic crime western “Killers of the Flower Moon” received 10.

These three productions will compete for Hollywood’s top prize – Best Picture – alongside Greta Gerwig’s pop culture phenomenon, “Barbie,” the 1970s holiday throwback “The Holdovers,” the romantic drama “Past Lives,” the racial satire “American Fiction,” Leonard Bernstein’s biopic “Maestro,” the French thriller “Anatomy of a Fall,” and the Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest.”

This year’s Best Picture list includes, for the first time, three productions directed by women – Gerwig (“Barbie”), Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”), and Celine Song (“Past Lives”) – although only Triet received a nomination in the Best Director category.

Lily Gladstone, the rising star of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” made history as the first Native American nominated for Best Actress. Golden Globe winner Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) is also competing in the same category, along with Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), and Annette Bening (“Nyad”).

The Best Actor category includes Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), and first-time nominees Murphy, Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”).

Scorsese, who is on the Best Director list alongside Triet, Nolan, Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), and Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), is the oldest nominee ever in the category at 81 years old.

This year’s Oscar ceremony will take place on March 10 at 7 PM and will be broadcast on ABC.
