Discover the Best Countries in the World for Tourism – The Brasilians

The United States has just received a significant honor. The country was named the best in the world for travel and tourism in 2024 by the World Economic Forum.

The rankings are determined by a wide range of criteria, including infrastructure, natural resources, sustainability, labor availability, and – since we are talking about the World Economic Forum – competitive pricing.

Another thing to keep in mind is that WEF data focuses on tourism – which involves hotels, airports, attractions, airlines, and similar entities.
Europe in the Lead

Six of the top 10 countries on the list are in Europe, with Spain being the country with the highest overall ranking (second overall). The report refers to the continent as “a resilient destination with strong inter-regional travel flows” and gives it high marks for rail connectivity. There are also points highlighting strong economies, the good position of the euro and the pound, and the likelihood of Europeans traveling more – which, in turn, means spending more money in this industry.

It is no surprise that France has high scores, coming in fourth overall. The country knows that the eyes of the world are on the Paris Summer Olympics this year.

Another factor taken into account is the power of many European passports. Every year, the Henley Index ranks the most powerful passports in the world, and this data was included in the WEF report. In 2024, six countries share the top spot in the ranking – France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain. Five of these nations appear in the WEF top 10, with Singapore in a respectable 13th place.
Asia’s Turn

“In 2024, global tourism growth is expected to be bolstered by the continued satisfaction of pent-up demand and growth in key Asian markets, after travel restrictions were lifted, following a delay compared to other regions,” the report states.

This certainly seems true in Japan, the third country in the ranking, which has seen a tourism boom since the post-pandemic reopening. More than three million foreign tourists visited Japan per month between March and April 2024, with more visits expected during the upcoming summer holidays.

Meanwhile, China, in eighth place, has taken steps in recent months to facilitate tourist visits. In March, it lifted visa requirements for residents of several European countries, including Ireland, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
American Beauty

Although the U.S. is the only North American country among the top 10, neighboring Canada is in 11th place.

According to the WEF, the U.S. is a “mature” tourism market, meaning it already has the infrastructure to host visitors, such as air connections linking cities and logistical support, like tour guides, car rentals, hotel rooms, and maps.

The size and scope of the U.S. really help it stand out: from national parks to major cities and great beaches, there is a wide variety of offerings for travelers.
