Ex-Rep. George Santos Sentenced to 7 Years and 3 Months in Prison

Former U.S. Rep. George Santos, son of a Brazilian immigrant, was sentenced on Friday (25) to 87 months — more than seven years — in federal prison for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. The 36-year-old Republican from New York admitted to a series of criminal schemes involving his political campaign to deceive donors, divert funds, and steal identities. In addition to the prison sentence, Santos was ordered to pay US$ 373 mil in restitution to his victims.

Santos’s defense requested the minimum sentence of 2 years, but Judge Seybert followed the federal prosecutors’ recommendation for a 87-month prison sentence. Prosecutors argued that Santos needed to serve a long sentence to reflect the “unprecedented gravity of his crimes” and “protect the public from future frauds”.

A Pattern of Deception

Santos’s conviction stems from a pattern of fraudulent behavior during and after his 2022 campaign for Congress. It was found that he stole the identities of at least 11 people, including family members, to make unauthorized donations to the campaign. Additionally, he submitted false financial information to the Federal Election Commission and received unemployment benefits while employed.

The case against Santos included 23 charges, encompassing wire fraud, money laundering, and false statements. Prosecutors highlighted his lack of remorse, citing public statements and social media posts in which he portrayed himself as a victim of prosecutorial overreach.

Expulsion and Consequences

Santos was expelled from Congress in December 2023, just over a year after the start of his term, following the revelation of his deceptive conduct. Despite the severity of his actions, he continued to seek public attention through platforms like Cameo and OnlyFans, offering personalized videos to fans and trying to raise money to cover his legal expenses.

In a statement before sentencing, Santos showed resignation to his fate, thanking both supporters and critics. But he continued promoting his Cameo video service, highlighting his ongoing efforts to maintain a public presence despite the legal challenges he faces.

Santos is to surrender to begin serving his sentence by July 25, 2025.

He told The New York Times that he will not seek a presidential pardon because he feels he needs to take “responsibility and accountability” for what he did.
