The Brazilian singer Anitta won in the Best Latin Music Video category at the MTV Video Music Awards, held at UBS Arena in New York City on Tuesday night (12).
This is the second VMA won by the Brazilian singer. Last year, Anitta became the first Brazilian to perform on the VMA stage and also won a statue for Best Latin Song with “Envolver.”
“I can’t believe it. Brazil, we are here again. For the second time. Thank you to my fans, I would be nothing without them, I owe everything I have to them. I am very grateful!” Anitta said in her speech, where she also thanked her record label, her team, her brother Renan, and herself.
“I want to thank myself because I worked really hard! You are listening to Brazilian funk and you will hear much more, this is just the beginning!” the singer concluded.
The winning music video “Funk Rave” competed against Bad Bunny (“Where She Goes”), Eslabon Armado & Peso Pluma (“Ella Baila Sola”), Grupo Frontera & Bad Bunny (“un x100to”), Karol G & Shakira (“TQG”), Rosalía (“Despechá”), and Shakira (“Acróstico”).
The music video, creatively directed by the singer herself, reached over 16 million views on the YouTube platform.
Her performance shook UBS Arena
Anitta took the stage singing “Savage Funk” from her latest album Funk Generation, and “Alegria,” a single with Tiago PZK and Emilia that was released in August. The singer also performed “Paradise” alongside Fat Joe, DJ Khaled, and Tiago PZK.
At the end of “Paradise,” Fat Joe called Anitta the “Queen of Brazil.” The audience got excited and danced with the Brazilian singer.
Anitta released her album Funk Generation on April 26. A review of the singer’s new work by Rolling Stone noted that the album “thrives when Anitta takes risks” and added that the singer “has everything it takes to pioneer the future of baile funk in pop and captivate audiences in Brazil and around the world.”
Swift leads the awards once again
Taylor Swift’s dominance continues at the MTV Video Music Awards. This year, she took home seven awards — including the biggest of the night, for Video of the Year.
In her acceptance speech, Swift thanked her “boyfriend, Travis,” for being on the set of the music video for “Fortnight” and supporting her. The audience cheered.
“Everything this man touches turns into happiness, fun, and magic,” she said, before shifting the topic to the 2024 presidential election and urging her fans aged 18 and over to register to vote.
Taylor Swift announced her support for Kamala Harris on Tuesday night (10), following the first presidential debate of this election cycle.
Swift’s total awards now stands at 30, tying her with Beyoncé as the most awarded musician in VMA history. Eminem is now the male artist with the most VMAs, with 15.
