Itatiaia National Park, the Oldest National Park in Brazil

Itatiaia National Park, created in 1937, is the oldest national park in Brazil. It is located on the border between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

Itatiaia National Park is the oldest national park in Brazil, created on June 14, 1937, by President Getúlio Vargas. The park is situated in the Serra da Mantiqueira. It encompasses parts of the municipalities of Itatiaia and Resende in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and Bocaina de Minas and Itamonte in the state of Minas Gerais. It is mountainous and rocky, with altitudes ranging from 540 to 2,791 meters (1,772 to 9,157 ft). The highest point is the Pico das Agulhas Negras.

The high part of the park contains the springs of 12 watersheds that supply the Rio Grande, a tributary of the Rio Paraná, and the Paraíba do Sul, the most important river in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The lower part of the park features lush Atlantic Forest vegetation and wide rivers with natural pools and waterfalls.

The Pico das Agulhas Negras is the third highest mountain in the state, standing at 2,878 meters (9,442 ft). The park attracts birdwatchers from around the world with its 350 species of birds. Other attractions include trails and rock climbing. The park is surrounded by the Environmental Protection Area of Serra da Mantiqueira, which provides an ecological buffer zone for the park.

The high area of the park is accessible via an entrance about 35 km from the main entrance and provides access to the Pico das Agulhas Negras and the Prateleiras complex. The lower area of the park is much closer to the city of Itatiaia and features many waterfalls, such as the Véu da Noiva, which is 45 meters high. The lower area also has a Natural History Museum. Itatiaia means “stone of many sharp points” in the Tupi language. Source: wikipedia
