United States Announces Additional Humanitarian Support for Flood-Affected Areas in Brazil – The Brasilians

The United States, through USAID, plans to provide $800,000 in humanitarian assistance to meet the immediate needs of people affected by the devastating floods in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. This brings the total USAID humanitarian assistance in response to the recent floods in Brazil to $1 million. Widespread flooding and landslides resulting from heavy rains that began in late April have affected nearly 2.3 million people and displaced more than 540,000 individuals in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil.

This funding will help meet the immediate needs for shelter management and provide critical protection services for those displaced from their homes and seeking emergency shelter due to the flooding, as well as support multipurpose cash assistance targeted at affected families.

This funding is in addition to the $200,000 already provided by USAID to help facilitate access to clean drinking water for individuals affected by the floods in southern Brazil, as well as provide cleaning supplies, hygiene kits, and training on safe water, sanitation, and hygiene practices. This immediate assistance is also supporting psychosocial and mental health support for nearly 5,000 individuals in shelters across 13 municipalities.

The United States stands with the people of Brazil and populations affected by crises around the world to provide critical humanitarian support to those in need.
