Rio is the First Portuguese-Speaking City Chosen by UNESCO as World Book Capital

The title of World Book Capital is awarded annually by UNESCO to a city that has demonstrated excellence in its activities to promote reading. The city of Rio de Janeiro was selected for the title in 2023, becoming the first Portuguese-speaking city to receive the honor.

The city will assume this role starting April 23, 2025, when World Book Day is celebrated. Rio will be responsible for promoting literature and coordinating events.

The city of Rio de Janeiro has a rich history of literature and culture. In addition to being the birthplace of nationally and internationally renowned authors, the city is home to important institutions and events, such as the Academia Brasileira de Letras, the Biblioteca Nacional, the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, the Bienal do Livro, the Sindicato Nacional dos Editores de Livros (Snel), and the Festa Literária das Periferias (Flup).
