In celebration of International Women’s Month (in March), the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Brazil announced the names of seven Brazilian women honored with the “Brazilian Women Making a Difference 2023” award. Their boldness and pioneering spirit in various fields reflect, directly and indirectly, the experience, strength, and creativity of these women who have helped transform Brazil well ahead of their time.
“It is an honor to recognize these exceptional Brazilian women for their contributions, hard work, and innovations that are making a difference in their communities and across Brazil. By being recognized with the Brazilian Women Making a Difference 2023 award, I hope these women inspire and encourage other women to take action,” said U.S. Ambassador to Brazil Elizabeth Frawley Bagley.
The award winners work with numerous programs in the communities where they live, covering everything from environmental rights to civic engagement and the advancement of inclusion and rights for indigenous communities, women, LGBTQIA+, and other historically marginalized groups.Meet the honorees:
• Marciele Procópio Delduque, founder of the Women Who Inspire Network of Mariana
• Aline Souza da Silva, president and director of the Cooperative Center for Recyclable Materials in the Federal District
• Walelasoetxeige Paiter Bandeira Suruí (Txai Surui), founder and coordinator of the Indigenous Youth Movement of Rondônia
• Jacqueline Moraes da Silva, State Secretary for Women’s Policies of Espírito Santo
• Erika Hilton, Federal Deputy in the state of São Paulo
• Flavia Santos Twardowski Pinto, professor and general director of the Osório Campus of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul
• Maria Jose da Silva, State Secretary for Women and Human Rights of Alagoas
