Extreme Sports in Rio – The Brasilians

Extreme Sports in Rio

The geographical layout of Rio de Janeiro is ideal for extreme sports. There are many options in the capital and in the mountainous region.

Rio de Janeiro is a Brazilian coastal city that lies at the foot of a mountain. It is the shape of Rio de Janeiro that makes the city so admired. After all, just look at Corcovado and Sugarloaf Mountain: enormous rocks & classic tourist spots. All this height and robustness are captivating and

much favorable for practicing extreme sports combined with nature.

Thanks to the Serra do Mar, venturing into the interior of the State guarantees unforgettable adventures. The Serra dos Órgãos National Park (local name for Serra do Mar) encompasses the cities of Guapimirim, Magé, Petrópolis, and Teresópolis. You will find there the largest trail network in Brazil.

Hang Gliding

To start the day in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, wear light clothing and apply sunscreen. Your destination is Pedra Bonita, a privileged peak in Tijuca National Park. This location is considered one of the best in the world for hang gliding and paragliding because of the panoramic view of almost the entire Marvelous City: the Cagarras Islands, the Rocinha neighborhood, Pedra da Gávea, among others.

After about 15 minutes, the landing is made at Pepino Beach, located in the São Conrado neighborhood. Walk along the shore, drink coconut water, and end the adventure with a swim. To perform the flights, it is necessary to seek expert instructors who can monitor your flight safely.

Guanabara Bay

Canoeing starts at the small Urca beach, which is only 100 m long. If the weather conditions are favorable, you can reach Praia de Fora, at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain, one of the options in Guanabara Bay. The coastline of the capital of Rio de Janeiro has its own characteristics. The coast is filled with mountains. There are beaches, the Atlantic Forest, as well as beautiful islands. Canoeing is practiced here from a rare perspective.

Diabo Beach is open for surfing and has many big and strong waves at certain times of the year. It is not a place for beginners: there are currents and irregular wave formations. Access is made from Arpoador, at the very end of Ipanema Beach. It is a partially enclosed location, and access is only possible from the right corner.

From the Top of the Mountain

It is time to climb the mountain towards the Serra dos Órgãos National Park. This is one of the best places for mountain sports such as climbing, hiking, and rappelling. The main attractions are Dedo de Deus, considered one of the biggest challenges in the country for those who want to climb, and Agulha do Diabo, named one of the 15 best rock climbs in the world.

The reserve also has 200 km of trails, some with challenging difficulty levels. This is the case of the Petrópolis – Teresópolis crossing. The 30 km of ups and downs through the high part of the mountains connect the two most well-known cities in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro.
