Sundaram Tagore Chelsea presents a specially curated selection of rarely seen landscapes by renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado. This impressive collection of prints includes works from his remarkable series Genesis, as well as three images from his latest project in the
Amazon rainforest in Brazil, aimed at raising awareness about the threats to the region from deforestation, mining, dam construction, livestock farming, soybean cultivation, and climate change. This is an opportunity to preview works from his upcoming photographic project.
From the ancient basalt columns of Mitsio Island, Madagascar, to the rains under the sun in the Central Valley of Kamchatka, Russia, these landscapes pay homage to nature in its original state. Salgado skillfully captures vast and remote realities where nature endures as it existed thousands of years ago. With deeply captivating narratives, these works may be photojournalistic by nature, but technically and
compositionally, they stand on their own as masterpieces of art. Sebastião Salgado has dedicated his life to documenting the impact of globalization on humanity. Over the past three decades, he has traveled to more than 100 countries for his photographic projects and dedicates years to each series to fully understand the scope of his subject. Genesis is Salgado’s third long-term series on global issues, following Workers (1986-1992) and Exodus (1993-1999). In eight years of production, Salgado calls Genesis his “love letter to the planet.” He is currently photographing in the Amazon, focusing on indigenous peoples and their disappearing environment and way of life.
The selection of images will be on display at Sundaram Tagore Chelsea from October 11 to November 10. For more information: www.sundaramtagore.com/exhibitions/sebastiao-salgado8
