Brazil Begins Settlement of Venezuelan Immigrants – The Brasilians

Brazil Begins Settlement of Venezuelan Immigrants

In another step towards welcoming Venezuelan immigrants to the country, the Brazilian government has initiated the settlement process for these immigrants in the cities of São Paulo and Cuiabá. Initially, 300 immigrants were accommodated, including 80 families, who chose to leave their entry point in Boa Vista (Roraima).

São Paulo received single immigrants, while Cuiabá is prepared to welcome families. The Venezuelans who chose to be settled have already received refugee or temporary resident status, undergone medical examinations, and taken the vaccines recommended by the Ministry of Health (yellow fever, measles, and diphtheria). The federal government is working in partnership with the municipalities involved and also with the United Nations.

Monitoring

According to Natalia Marcassa de Souza, Deputy Chief of Coordination and Monitoring of the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic, the immigrants were transported by aircraft from the Brazilian Air Force and accompanied throughout the process to the shelters, where they received support to integrate into Brazilian society and the job market.

“Before being settled, they receive a lot of guidance, including about the city they are in, to better understand things. The idea is that they stay in this initial shelter for three months,” she explains. While in the shelter, they will have contact with the Portuguese language and receive vocational training, while the children will be enrolled in Brazilian public schools.

Two other cities, Manaus and Campinas (SP), have expressed interest in participating in the program to receive Venezuelans currently in Boa Vista, which has received about 38,000 immigrants in the last two years, increasing the local population by nearly 10%. “Brazil does not close its borders. We have several international and humanitarian agreements. Brazil is a welcoming country, and to the extent of our possibilities, we will treat this as humanitarian assistance,” Souza emphasized.

Other Actions

In addition to the settlement of these immigrants, the government is already accommodating immigrants with shelters in Boa Vista, providing them with food, access to health care, and documentation. Last month, the Ministry of Justice published a decree that expedited the regularization of the status of these immigrants in the country, facilitating the obtaining of residence permits and the application for temporary visas.

Another shelter, with the capacity to house and feed 220 immigrants, was opened in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in March. The Armed Forces have been receiving and distributing meals to more than 1,200 Venezuelans in four shelters. A fifth is currently under construction, also in Boa Vista.
