The city of Rio de Janeiro declared a state of emergency on Monday (5) due to a surge in hospitalizations for suspected cases of dengue fever , officially recognizing that there is an epidemic of the disease.

According to the Municipal Health Department, it is a 45-year-old man, who was being treated at the emergency care unit (UPA) of the Maré Complex. The Health Department also said that three other deaths that occurred in 2024 are under investigation due to suspicion of dengue.

The areas of the city with the highest incidence of the disease are the regions of Campo Grande and Guaratiba, in the west zone, with 476 cases for every 100 thousand inhabitants.

Last Friday (2), local authorities unveiled a contingency plan to tackle the epidemic, encompassing measures to aid the population and combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the dengue virus.
