Reducing Vehicle Emissions in the U.S.

In the United States, government policies, innovations from the American auto industry and consumer interest in clean air have combined over recent decades to reduce emissions from passenger vehicles.

Recent progress includes the 2021 signing by President Biden of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which expands public transportation options; replaces deficient transit vehicles, including buses, with zero-emission vehicles; and builds a national network of electric-vehicle chargers.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reinstated a waiver under the Clean Air Act that lets California set emissions rules for cars and sport utility vehicles that are stricter than federal standards.
