After Nepal, Madagascar Enters Social Collapse

Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has left the country, opposition leader Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko told Reuters on Monday (13). The information was confirmed by a military source and a foreign diplomat.

RFI radio reported, citing sources, that Rajoelina left the country on a French military aircraft.

The chaos of recent days comes after weeks of protests by young people from “Generation Z”, which have left the African leader increasingly isolated, including among the military. According to the radio, last Sunday (12), the presidency warned of an attempted coup by members of “Capsat”, an elite unit that helped Rajoelina take power in 2009.

About a thousand people gathered on Sunday at Place du 13 Mai in the capital Antananarivo, in front of the city hall, to celebrate the Capsat troops, according to the report.

Rajoelina’s current whereabouts are unknown.

With this, Madagascar became the second government to collapse after the so-called “Generation Z protests” that initially rocked Nepal . Similar protests have spread to South America , in countries like Peru and Paraguay.
